The conversation in Alberta comes after B.C.’s health minister recently said he’s open to allowing a pay-for-plasma clinic in B.C. and Saskatchewan’s health minister said he supports the new clinic in that province.
Ontario and Quebec are the only provinces to have banned compensated plasma donations.
A private pay-for-plasma clinic has existed in Winnipeg for decades, and Canadian Plasma Resources ran a pilot project in Toronto two years ago before Ontario passed legislation banning payment for plasma donors.
Blood plasma, the pale fluid that remains once white and red blood cells and platelets are removed, can be used in transfusions and as a material in life-saving products to treat a wide range of diseases and disorders.
