Calgary Herald: Safe blood activists coming to Alberta to advocate for paid plasma ban

Members of a national lobby group will travel to Edmonton next week to urge Alberta’s health minister to ban private, for-profit plasma clinics.

Kat Lanteigne, co-Founder of BloodWatch.org, wants to see Alberta follow in Ontario’s footsteps and pass legislation that bans payment for plasma donors.

She said she’ll be meeting with the health minister’s office in Edmonton and other organizations in Alberta to educate them on the issue.

“My biggest hope is that we can encourage the Alberta government to implement their own version of the Voluntary Blood Donations Act, which was the law we passed here in Ontario (in 2014),” she said Thursday.

Lanteigne said that paid plasma is problematic and provincial legislation is needed so governments aren’t left powerless when private companies try to operate.
