The Star: Paid plasma donors approval could rest on Ontario government

It may ultimately be up to the province whether or not a Canadian company gets the go-ahead to open paid-plasma donor clinics in Toronto.

The company, Canadian Plasma Resources, must overcome two regulatory hurdles before it can pay donors $20 for their plasma, a protein-rich liquid found in blood and manufactured into life-saving treatments.

Health Canada’s No. 1 priority is to ensure safety of the blood supply and to make sure that the company meets specific safety standards — these are the guiding principles that will determine if it is licensed by the federal department.

The highly-contentious issue of whether blood donors can be compensated is a matter that falls under provincial legislation.
