Safe Blood Advocates Laud Alberta Government For Paid-Plasma Ban:

BloodWatch commends Minister Hoffman and the Alberta Government for bringing forth legislation that protects the security and integrity of the public blood system by banning for profit paid-plasma. Our pan-Canadian voluntary system is integral to ensuring patients receive the highest standard of care by Canadian Blood Services.

The Alberta Government has demonstrated strong, steadfast leadership in upholding Justice Krever’s landmark recommendations on how to maintain the integrity of our voluntary blood system. As Canadians, we must work towards self-sufficiency in order to secure domestic blood products today and for future generations to come. We firmly believe Canadians will continue to answer the call and donate blood and plasma voluntarily.

We are hopeful that all provinces will now join Alberta, Ontario and Quebec in implementing a ban so we can secure our blood supply. Canadian Blood Services must be fully supported in their plasma collection strategy across Canada.

BloodWatch offers our unequivocal support for the ban on paid-plasma in Alberta. This is an historic moment for the people of Alberta and triumphant ending to a very difficult chapter in our Canadian blood story.
